What does this test measure?

This blood test measures the total amount of testosterone in the blood - both bound and unbound testosterone. The test is used as one of the measures to decide if a patient would benefit from Testosterone Replacement Therapy.

When can I test for Total Testosterone?

It is recommended that the blood sample is taken in the morning before 11 am.

How do I take my sample?

Home Diagnostics will send a self-collection kit that is a licensed medical device appropriate for use by patients at home. You can use the kit to extract a small amount of blood from a finger. This is then sent back to our laboratory using a reply-paid envelope using the Royal Mail 24 Tracked service.

How long do results take?

Results are available 24 hours after your sample arrives at the laboratory. Most results are back the same day, but this depends on lab volumes on the day the sample is received.

How reliable are the results?

This test is highly accurate, but we do not recommend using capillary blood samples if you have been using topically applied hormones (especially testosterone), as this can cause interference on the assay.

Does the result include actual levels?

The lab report is included, so this will show you testosterone levels and the laboratory reference range.


Does a doctor help me understand the results?

Yes. A named UK doctor will interpret your results for you.
