Free Testosterone Test
What does the Free Testosterone test measure?
This Free Testosterone blood test measures the amount of bioavailable testosterone - that is the testosterone that is unbound to proteins and available to enter cells. This measure of testosterone can be more useful than the Total Testosterone panel is some cases. If there is an anomalous result on the Total Testosterone panel, then the Free Testosterone panel may be recommended.
Can I buy a Free Testosterone Test online?
Yes. You can buy a self-collect Free Testosterone test online via Home Diagnostics for next day delivery in the UK.
How do I take my sample?
Home Diagnostics will send a self-collection kit that is a licensed medical device appropriate for use by patients at home. You can use the kit to extract a small amount of blood from a finger. This is then sent back to our laboratory using a reply-paid envelope using the Royal Mail 24 Tracked service.
When can I test for Free Testosterone?
It is recommended that the blood sample is taken in the morning between 7 am and 11 am. Testosterone levels decrease as the days progresses, so measuring in this time window will produce the most meaningful results.
How long do results take for Free Testosterone?
Results are available 3 days after your sample arrives at the laboratory.
How reliable are the results?
This Free Testosterone test is highly accurate, but we do not recommend using capillary blood samples if you have been using topically applied hormones (especially testosterone), as this can lead to inaccurate results.
The Free Testosterone panel is not recommended for female patients monitoring testosterone levels while using testosterone replacement therapy. The UK guidelines recommend Total Testosterone for this purpose.
Self-collect blood test kits may be appropriate if you have been using rubber gloves when applying topical hormones, but there is still a small risk for residue getting into the sample. A venous blood sample collected professionally may therefore be more appropriate.
Does the result include actual Free Testosterone levels?
The lab report is included, so this will show your Free Testosterone levels and the laboratory reference range.
Does a doctor help me understand the results?
Yes. A named UK doctor will interpret your results for you.
