Hepatitis B & C Blood Test

Hepatitis Blood Test

This blood test looks for the Hepatitis B surface antigen and the Hepatitis C antibody from a small sample of blood taken from a finger prick collection kit. Once the sample is returned to the lab in the pre-paid envelope, the results are ready within just 4 - 6 hours.

What is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver, but within the context of this test, we are describing viral hepatitis caused by either the Hepatitis B virus or the Hepatitis C virus.

Symptoms of Hepatitis

With Hepatitis B, most people will experience symptoms in the acute phase. These might include the following:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Dark urine

  • Jaundiced skin and eyes

  • Fever

Some people may only experience mild flu-like symptoms.

With Hepatitis C, most people will not experience symptoms in the acute phase. A minority of infected people will clear the infection naturally within a few months, but 80% will go on to develop chronic hepatitis if left untreated.

How is Hepatitis passed?

Hepatitis C requires transmission of infected blood. Sharing of needles between drug users was a common infection route. Unprotected anal sex is also a possible infection route. Hepatitis B is easier to transmit and is secreted in semen, blood and vaginal fluids. This means Hepatitis B is a more common sexually transmitted infection.

When to test for Hepatitis

If you think that you have been exposed to either of these viruses then you can test at any time but Hepatitis B will be unlikely to be detectable until around 2 months after infection. Hepatitis C is normally detectable between 45 and 65 days after infection.

Why get tested?

Most people requesting this test do so as they have a requirement to demonstrate that they do not have these viruses. You will be given a copy of your lab report as a certificate to present to whichever body or authority has requested the test.

Jane Clarke

I needed this test for my IVF clinic. The staff were very helpful and I had my results on time. I also needed the Hepatitis B core antibody test, which they did not have. They helpfully arranged this via a different website. The customer service team member said they will introduce this test soon, which will obviously be better if I ever need the service again.
