Buy a Ureaplasma Test
What is Ureaplasma?
Ureaplasma Urealyticum and Ureaplasma Parvum are bacteria that can colonize the urethra and vagina. Quite often when patients have been given a diagnosis of NSU by the NHS, we discover that the culprit bacterium is one of these two. Ureaplasma has a low level of pathogenicity so it can sometimes live in the body without causing any problems whatsoever. It can sometimes cause an unusual discharge and a burning sensation when passing urine.
Is this test right for me?
Ureaplasma is covered by our Full STI Screen and that is the test that we recommend for anyone with Genito-Urinary symptoms (such as discharge or burning sensation when passing urine). If other possibilities have been excluded then we can recommend the Ureaplasma test.
How does the test work?
We send you out a sample collection kit with a prepaid envelope. The sample we require is either urine or a vaginal swab. Simply take that sample as directed and send this back to our lab. We will test the sample by PCR to ensure accurate results.
How long does it take?
Ureaplasma tests normally take between 36 and 48 hours to process, depending on lab volumes. This turnaround time will be one of the fastest that you will find available. Your results will be uploaded to your account as soon as they become available.
Unlike many of the tests available in the UK, our test distinguishes between Ureaplasma Parvum and Ureaplasma Urealyticum on a postive result.
Can Ureaplasma be treated?
The latest guidance from the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV is that a postive Ureaplasma result does not automatically indicate treatment is required. Ureaplasma is considered a commensal organism. The new guidance is that Ureaplasma should be specialist prescribing only, as it is not required in most patients who test positive for this organism.
